Maria Goodloe-Johnson was fired for misappropriating $1.8 million of a total budget of over $500 million! She misappropriated the educational welfare of many children, including my own, but that's not what gets the attention of the public. Yes, the people should be outraged, but not because of money. Our children are our future, literally. You don't have to have children to know this or to care. I'm not dismissing the $1.8 million. It's time she got her due. I'm just wondering what about the children?
What are outliers? Think back to all that dreaded math and science and envision a bell curve. It looks like a hill. It's symmetrical, low on the left side as well as the right, but the majority is in the middle, the high part. Rightly, the public school system should focus on serving the masses. It also has an obligation to at least have a small group of people on staff to address the outliers. It does not.
Outliers on either side of the primary bell curve, have outliers, too. There are programs for the intellectually advanced as well as the developmentally challenged. But what I'm talking about are the outliers of the outliers, the children in exceptional circumstances. My son was in an exceptional situation, the only one in the district as far as I know. I worked my way up through the food chain all the way to Maria Goodloe-Johnson herself who told me outright, "I will not make an exception for your son." Where are the sanctions for that?
So I took my issue to the City of Seattle, to King County, and to Washington State and they all told me the same thing. There is NO oversight for the public school districts.
I have tried to garner the interest of the media to no avail. Why? My child is a human being not a piece of paper. Clearly, had he been the couple hundred thousand of them that he represents, the media would have snatched it up.
Now is the time to get outraged. Now is the time to push for oversight of public schools in addition to replacing one dictator with another.
